Common Signs of Early Pregnancy

The best way to confirm a pregnancy is through a pregnancy test. However, pregnant women have common early symptoms.

Read on to discover what to expect in the first few weeks of pregnancy.

1. Missed Period

When you notice your menstrual cycle does not show up after a week, it may be an early pregnancy sign. Note that if you have not been sexually active in the last six weeks, you may not be pregnant. Also, if you have an irregular menstrual cycle, this sign may mislead you.


2. Swollen, Sensitive Breasts

Some hormonal changes occur in the body after conception. These changes can make your breasts sore or tender.

Normally, the tingly sensation or discomfort will eventually stop after your body adapts to the hormonal disruption.


3. Tiredness

Another common sign of early pregnancy is tiredness or fatigue. In the early weeks of pregnancy, you may notice that you feel drowsy or you get tired easily.

Sleepiness in early pregnancy may be due to the high levels of the progesterone hormone. To increase your energy level, get adequate sleep at night and keep your room cool during the day.


4. Nausea and vomiting

Nausea may be accompanied by vomiting. This symptom is commonly known as morning sickness.

Nausea may show up within the first four to eight weeks of pregnancy. But you may never experience it at all. The cause is not well established, but the rapid hormonal changes may make you feel like vomiting.


5. Mood Swings

An increase in hormones in the body can lead to abnormal emotional reactions and moodiness. It's important to pay attention to your mental health early in your pregnancy. Having a supportive partner who understands how you feel can help you manage mood swings.


6. Frequent Urination

Pregnancy usually comes with increased urination. You may suddenly discover that you need to visit the ladies more often. Increased urination occurs because your blood volume rises during pregnancy. As a result, your kidneys have to process more fluid, and the waste products fill your bladder.


7. Implantation Bleeding

This symptom is also called light spotting. It takes place as soon as the fertilized egg hooks itself to the uterus lining - usually about 14 days after the sperm fertilizes the egg. Unfortunately, this symptom may be confusing because it shows up when you expect to see your menstrual period.


8. Stuffy Nose

As the hormone levels in your body keep rising, and blood production increases, changes can occur in your nose. The mucous membranes may start to swell or dry out. In some cases, you may experience nose bleeding or a stuffy nose.


9. Food sensitivity

In the early stage of pregnancy, you might loathe some odors and flavors. Unfortunately, this change in taste may last for a few weeks.

During this period, your food preferences will change due to hormonal changes in the body.


10. Bloating and Constipation

Just like it happens during a menstrual period, you may experience bloating. Your digestive system may work slower due to hormonal changes.

As a result, you may feel constipated. Constipation can even increase your feelings of bloating. To reduce this effect, eat more foods with dietary fiber and increase your water intake.


11. Temperature changes

An increased body temperature could be an early sign of pregnancy. Note that your body's temperature can rise due to hot weather or intense exercise.

To maintain your normal body temperature, you need to increase your water intake and exercise moderately.


12. Rising Heart Rate

Blood flow rises significantly during pregnancy. And this increases the work your heart must do to circulate it.

Usually, at about 8 weeks of pregnancy, you may feel your heart pumping harder and faster. If you feel pains around your heart or you had a heart condition before getting pregnant, you need to discuss it with your medical caregiver.


13. Weight Gain

You may discover that you have added close to 4 pounds in weight within the first three months of pregnancy. Also, in your first trimester, you may start to feel hungry more often.

As your baby grows, your daily calorie recommendations will increase. Follow the guidance of your healthcare provider on how to maintain a healthy diet during your pregnancy.
